The
Bat Conservation Trust have been in touch with us, offering some valuable
guidance, advice and suggestions on protecting the endangered species that
exist within the MIN93 site.Bats are a protected species in the UK, and the law is very strict in this area. The penalty for causing harm to a bat - any type of bat - is a £5000 fine for each individual harmed, accompanied by a potential 6 months prison sentence.
If bats are known to overfly an area or a location scheduled for development, the developer is requirement under UK law to commission a Bat Survey, to be carried out by an independant wildlife consultant and publish the results of that survey before any planning can take place.
It just so happens that the land proposed for the MIN93 site is alive with bats. Walk down Paws Lane, Back Road or Abbey Road at dusk, and you'll see hundreds of the little guys flitting back and forth, feeding on airborne insects and creatures.
These bats may or may not be roosting within the MIN93 site, but their very presence in the area means that before any planning can commence, a full bat survey must be carried out on the site.
In order to ensure that survey gets carried out, we all need to write to both Savills and Norfolk County Council, demanding that a bat survey be carried out on MIN93 before the process is allowed to proceed to the next stage.
To add gravity to your request, you may cite the following three peices of relevant legislation.
