Pentney is a frightened community. A small and very scared village, with some very real fears and concerns that the proposed MIN93 gravel quarry will have a significant negative impact on everyone's health, resulting in aggravation and worsening of existing conditions, an increased risk of new conditions, and hitting the elderly, disabled and our children hardest of all.
To
highlight this, the streets of Pentney were filled this afternoon (May 8th)
with local children who donned gas masks while they went about their normal
day to day after school fun and games. The local youngsters wanted to draw attention to their fears about air pollution from the heavy machinery, generators and pumping equipment that will be used in the gravel extraction process, as well as tiny airborne particles called PM10, which can become permanently lodged in the lungs, and in extreme cases can cause incurable respiratory diseases.
We
were honoured to have BBC Look East's Jenny Kirk with us in the village for
the event. Jenny came along to do a short article on the Pentney Parish Plight, and as luck would have it, we were able to arrange the two events to coincide. Some excellent footage was recorded, and interviews were carried out with the local children and with Cliff Smalley from the Save Pentney Action Group.
The interviews and article can be viewed by clicking here.
The message from Pentneys children this afternoon was clear... "Stop playing games with our health and future".
On behalf of the whole village of Pentney, I would like to take this opportunity to thank Jenny, all the children who participated, the parents and grandparents who rallied them, Cliff, and of course the supplier of the gas masks, mr Mark Walker who is a distant but dedicated supporter of the campaign to save Pentney village.
